Yesterday was National Girls and Women in Sports Day and in the spirit of that, we'd like to share the inspiring story of the Waithaka Soccer Queens in Kenya.

Women’s soccer is a unique phenomenon in Africa, where it is still very much considered a man’s game, but the  movement is slowly gaining steam due in large part to strong movements led by teams like the Waithaka Soccer Queens. The Queens are playing not only for the sheer love of the sport but also for equality, traveling all over Kenya and earning money from local tournaments in order to help sustain their families. In the Under 16 category, the Queens have won four national titles, in addition to other assorted medals and achievements. It is their dream to one day compete in the Kenya Women’s Premier League, an on-again off-again league that will hopefully see more success in the future with increased awareness of the women’s game.
